What Is Integrative Medicine?
(Return to "What is Integrative Medicine?")
Anti (Accelerated)-Aging - The "fountain of youth" is no longer found only at the cosmetics counter. Actually, it was never found there. Aging is directly proportional to what we put into our bodies. Have you ever heard the saying "You only get out of it what you put into it"? Such is true with your body. The more time you spend eating the right foods, taking the right supplements, exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, and keeping the mind - body - spirit connection balanced, the slower and more gracefully you will age. Finally, we know the location of the fountain of youth ... it has been within us the entire time.
Biomarkers are tests that monitor different processes that accelerate aging. We are able to test for these by doing simple lab work that includes:
Hemoglobin A1C - Conventional doctors use this test to monitor patients with diabetes. In Integrative Medicine, we use it to see where a patient is on the slippery slope to becoming a diabetic.
Homocystiene - This accelerates the aging of blood vessels and the brain. It is used in Integrative Medicine to monitor the risk of cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, and cancer.
CRP - The CRP level monitors general inflammation, which accelerates aging.
Lipid Peroxides - This test monitors damage to cell walls and the level of free radical activity in the body.
NMR-Lipoprofile - This test examines the breakdown of cholesterol numbers in a new way, which better predicts the risk of cardiovascular death.
Anti-aging is not about living to 150 or 500 years-old. Maybe 120 years, scientists predict. It's really about adding life to your years. In simple terms, it is the practice of correctly balancing those natural processes that get out of balance as we age so that we age more gracefully and maintain our health and vitality until the end.
