Bio-Identical Hormones - Bio-identical hormones are hormones that are identical to those produced by the human body. They are produced in laboratories from wild Mexican yams, which contain chemicals that have a similar structure to the hormones themselves. Some of these bio-identical hormones are available through large pharmaceutical companies, for example Estrace, Vivelle-Dot, EstroGel, Divigel are all the bio-identical hormone estradiol, the strongest estrogen in a woman's body. AndroGel and Testim are bio-identical testosterone and are available for men who have low testosterone levels. Prometrium is bio-identical progesterone for women.
Other drugs like Premarin, Provera, Prempro, Estratest, and birth control pills do not have human hormones in them. They are drugs. Sometimes these can still be useful for various clinical problems, but for the most part, it's better to use human hormones as opposed to drugs.
Some men and women are not able to tolerate or prefer using hormones products that have been made by a compounding pharmacist. There are other forms of testosterone and estrogen, which may be of benefit to individual patients. These include Dihydrotestosterone for men and Estriol and Estrone for women. Since these are not available from pharmaceutical companies, these have to be made by compounding pharmacists.
At Vaughan Integrative Medicine, we solely use bio-identical hormones and we monitor the levels of these to make certain that patients are getting just the right dose for their body and their stage in life.
